Memorial Ride for Sylvia

Well yesterday would have been Sylvia’s 16th birthday. We spent the some time thinking about her and went out to sushi which I know she would have loved. Char cooked Sylvia’s favorite desert, a great Kaluha Fudge Cake.

On a related note, someone from Colorado Springs contacted me and has volunteered to do a Memorial Ride for Sylvia on the Porcupine Rim trail. He said he would put up a small cross for her and his group would stop and remember her when they passed the place where she died. I told him I thought is was a great idea. As it turns out he scheduled the ride on May 5th, Char’s birthday. Anyhow, here is a link from his site where they scheduled the ride. The group is Colorado Springs Believers on Mountain Bikes. I haven’t asked but I get the impression that they would welcome anyone who wanted to join the ride (This is confirmed see comments below).
Char and I have discussed attending the ride but I’m not sure I could return and revisit those memories yet.

New Hogan Trailwork Recap

We had a great turnout at the Lake Hogan Trailwork weekend, on Saturday 11 people showed up and on Sunday we had 13 people working on the trails. It didn’t seem like it was going to work out so well at first though. Fiona and I showed up on Friday night and the weather rapidly degraded over Friday night. We abandoned the campfire when the winds started blowing through the camp at 20-30+ MPH and the rain started falling. Even inside the RV it was hard to sleep with the constant battering of the wind and intermittent rain. Saturday morning dawned and things weren’t much better, it looked like the weekend was going to be a washout due to weather… Continue reading New Hogan Trailwork Recap

Lake Hogan Trail Work

March 24-26th we have the group campsite at Lake Hogan (Directions) reserved so we can do some trailwork up there. Char and I are staying up there all weekend, you can camp (free) if you want. We will be doing trail work on Saturday and Sunday for about 4-5 hours each day and riding for a few hours each afternoon. If you haven’t ridden at Hogan this is a good chance to give it a try. There are trails for all levels of riders plus we are going to be adding a mile or two of trails where there aren’t any yet. Continue reading Lake Hogan Trail Work

Craziest Cool Race Ever

The Cool Race is always crazy but this year took the cake. Not only was there 6″+ of mud but there was more than 8″ of snow plus it snowed and rained on the race. Snow, big creek crossings, tons of mud, it’s enough to make my toes numb sitting here at my desk. I’m not big on racing and not fond of mud so I wasn’t there, but I wanted to tip my helmet to those who were. Here’s some folks from MTBR who raced… The thread starts a bit slow but if you read further down there are lots of race day stories and pictures of the snowy mayhem. There are also a ton of pictures on the Prairie City Racing Site.

Circumnavigating Folsom Lake

Lake FolsomZon from MTBR had a vision, his vision was to circumnavigate Folsom Lake on Mountain Bike trails. This ride was the result of Zon’s Vision, I’m glad I was able to be a part of this ride for a lot of reasons. The ride was almost exactly 50 miles long, which is by a long shot a personal distance record for me. I have ridden 50 miles on a road ride before… but that doesn’t count. The total effort involved in this ride was many times that required on the road ride.

This ride had some unique challenges as well, primarily the fact that short of riding clear to Auburn there is no easy way across the long dogleg section where the North Fork American River enters the lake. The solution to this was a unique one, Zon arranged to shuttle us by boat. Anyhow… check out the pictures and my impressions of the ride here.
